The Bass Rock is home to the world's largest colony of Northern gannets. They spend most of the year on the Bass, arriving in late February until the end of October when they set out on their long journey down to the West coast of Africa.

The historic castle and harbour in the coastal town of Dunbar supports a breeding colony of black-legged kittiwakes. Kittiwakes are beautiful gulls with a bright yellow beak, distinctive black legs and black wing tips which look as though they have been dipped in ink. They spend most of their time at sea only coming ashore to breed between February and August.

National Nature Reserve, the Isle of May is a magical wildlife haven in the outer Firth of Forth. In spring and early summer the island becomes a teeming seabird city with thousands of seabirds returning to breed, including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, kittiwakes and shags. In autumn the island is home to the largest breeding grey seal colony on the East Coast of Britain with over 2000 pups born there each year.
