Winter Wonders: Coastal Birds for Beginners

Join our Conservation Officers for an indoor session identifying coastal birds as part of the Scottish Seabird Centre’s ‘Winter Wonders’ activities. Find out more about the wonderful wild birds that can be spotted on Scotland's shores over winter, focusing on those you’re likely to see locally in and around North Berwick.

Whether you’re new to the area, new to birdwatching, or you just want an opportunity to chat about the birds you have seen nearby, everyone is welcome to ask questions, share their knowledge and experiences, or simply relax and learn something new.

If the weather allows, we may end the session with a short wander to see what we can spot along the shore.

Route

The session will take place in our Learning Hub (the classroom attached to the SSC office building, opposite the visitor centre). Enjoy an indoor talk and then (if time and weather allow) a short outdoor venture. This will take participants on a brief return journey onto Milsey Bay beach. Tours will vary depending on what we can see and the particular interests of the participants, but a variety of species and habitats will be explored and discussed.

What will we provide?

Binoculars (for the outdoor element), ID sheets, alcohol hand-gel (if needed).

What do you need to bring?

Sturdy boots or shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather outside (but comfortable for sitting indoors for an hour), a drink, any medication you may need, a mobile phone, sun protection (good weather days).

Accessibility

We will be sitting indoors for 60-90 minutes during this event. The classroom is wheelchair accessible – please let us know prior to the event so that we can arrange the layout of chairs to accommodate. The route for the outdoor element includes some gentle slopes, uneven sand, rocky ground, and slippery surfaces. We will always try to adjust the pace and the route to make sure that everyone is comfortable, but please let us know in advance if you have questions or concerns. You can direct queries to conservationprojects@seabird.org.

What if my event is cancelled?

If this event is cancelled, we will get in touch with you the day before to let you know. On rare occasions, we may be in touch on the day of the event. Please keep an eye on your emails prior to the event. You will be refunded. Please be aware that, depending on the weather, we may choose not to include the outdoor element, though if this is the case we may find a sheltered area by the café to scan the shore. The outdoor element is not intrinsic to the session, so you will not be refunded if this part cannot go ahead.
