Liminal Stone Exhibition

Examining the geologic landscape of North Berwick

Liminal Stone is a joint exhibition by Michael James Lewis and Kyle Lunneborg examining the geologic landscapes of North Berwick. Through analogue photography, drawing, and an ongoing series of zines, they trace evidence of the East Lothian coastline as a fluid topography and unpick our collective tendency to view the earth as a stable body - instead recognising the perpetual, subtle changes evident throughout the natural world. Through the work, they hope to encourage viewers to consider the dynamic connections between time, place, and the systems we use to comprehend the world around us.

Michael James Lewis @michaeljameslewis

Michael James Lewis is an artist, educator, and maker whose work investigates the relationships between time, place, and the built environment. Informed by his background in architecture, his practice explores the tension between natural phenomena and imposed structures, primarily through drawing and analogue photography. His recent work juxtaposes fluid, organic forms—evoking landscapes in flux or geological transformations—with rigid grids and frameworks that suggest humanity’s impulse to map, measure, and impose order. These explorations are dialogues between fleeting moments, deep time, and the intersections of natural phenomenon and human languages.

Process lies at the heart of Lewis’s practice. Photography is used to capture precise observations and characteristics of place, while drawing translates these observations into generalised prompts that invite questions about materiality, structure, and inhabitation.

Kyle Lunneborg @ltdmaynerd

Kyle ‘Maynerd’ Lunneborg, originally from the lake country of Minnesota and the mountains of Washington, is a multidisciplinary artist based in North Berwick, Scotland. His practice spans illustration, painting, murals, doodles, design, and photography.

With a foundation in illustration and design, Maynerd began experimenting with epoxy resin, developing a signature layered style in his paintings. His passion for analog photography has evolved alongside his artistic practice, offering a complimentary outlet for visual expression.

His work has been exhibited internationally, with shows in London, Edinburgh, Seattle, Jackson, Philadelphia, Portland, Minneapolis, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

This project was made possible thanks to funding from The North Berwick Trust and support from pARTicipate NB.
