Eleven-year-old Finlay McKenzie, from Ormiston Primary School, has been selected as the winner of the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Puffin Fest colouring competition.
Run in collaboration with the Edinburgh Sketcher, who created a puffin drawing for school pupils to colour in, children from across the Lothians were invited to show their creative flair and imagination. Three-hundred and twenty entries were received resulting in a tough challenge for the Edinburgh Sketcher during the judging process.
The Edinburgh Sketcher said: “I’m so pleased that so many children took part in the Puffin Fest colouring competition. The standard was very good – there are plenty of future sketchers out there!
“Finlay’s entry instantly caught my eye. There is some lovely subtle shading and the creation of a very effective sunset. I like too that the puffins are reflecting the sunlight, great attention to detail.”
Finlay said: “I love to draw and it’s one of my favourite things to do, so I can’t believe that I won! It’s very exciting and it will be an honour to open the festival. I have a big interest in nature and I can’t get enough of it; I hope that everyone has lots of fun, and that the puffins enjoy themselves, too!”
Laura Adamson, Marketing Manager at the Scottish Seabird Centre, said: “We were so impressed with the attention to detail and creativity across the entries that we decided to select a winner for three different age groups as well as an overall winner.
“As our overall winner, Finlay is invited to officially open Puffin Fest on Friday 20 May, while each of the age group winners; Amber Glass (age 11) Ormiston Primary School; Flora Cross (age 7) from Law Primary School; and Zoe Coltman (age 6) from Loretto Junior School, will win the chance to visit us during Puffin Fest.
“A huge well done and thanks to everyone who entered!”
The Edinburgh Sketcher is hosting special workshops on Sunday 22 May. Speed Sketching by the Coast will offer the chance to learn sketching skills and tips, while drawing in ink and watercolour, with the chance to take away a mounted piece of work following a sketching tour around the harbour. This event is £5 (plus secure half-price entry to the Discovery Centre) and should be pre-booked online HERE.
