Evening Talk: Foraging Behaviours of Bass Rock Gannets
Evening Talk: Foraging Behaviours of Bass Rock Gannets
Thursday 26 July 2018

19:30-21:00 at the Centre Tickets 5 (4 for members)

Seabirds are fantastic indicators of ocean health; as predators at the top of the food chain they are affected by changes to prey populations caused by over fishing, pollution, climate change and marine plastics. Miniaturised data loggers have revolutionised our understanding of seabird foraging behaviour and the gannets from Bass Rock have made a large contribution to this work.

PhD researchers from the University of Leeds, Jude Lane, Ruth Jeavons and Chris Pollock, are currently working to understand more about gannet foraging behaviour at a time when many seabird populations are declining. This evening provides an opportunity to find out more about one of the UKs most charismatic seabirds and hear about the latest research findings and plans.

Anticipate insights into how adult and immature gannets differ in their foraging strategies, how accelerometers are used to define behaviour every second whilst at sea and how estimates of flight height and computer simulated models can estimate the potential impact wind farms could have on the Bass Rock gannets.
